We strip out worn valleys, lift the tiles back on both sides, lay the new valley and bed the tiles tight against it. We also dress new lead around chimneys and where a roof meets a wall.
A valley carries all the water from two slopes, so a worn lining or cracked mortar there shows up as a leak quickly. The before and after below is the same valley, stripped out and with the new grey lining in, and the photo at the top of this page shows it finished.
Lucy had split flashing resealed as part of a wider repair. Stephen asked us to look at lead flashing above a window. Lead around a chimney base is usually done with the chimney repair, and that's on its own page.
From the ground, check where the roof meets a chimney or wall for lead that has lifted or split, and look along any valley for missing mortar. Indoors, damp near one of those junctions is the usual clue, although water can follow the timbers and show up some way from where it got in.
